Drum Birthing
Drum making is a deeply ceremonial process, a weaving together of craft, spirit and prayer. Rooted in listening, instinct, and our connection with the natural world.
This alchemical process is known as ‘birthing’. Each drum is created slowly and with intention, honouring the animal, the wood, and the life they once carried. By assembling what remains with gratitude and presence, new life is given to something that has passed. A living ally and a lifelong teacher is born.
A drum is not simply something to play. It is something to journey with. Something to return to.
A heartbeat calling you back into relationship with yourself, the land, and the old ways.
The process of birthing a drum feels deeply entwined with the work of embodiment.
The weight of the hoop, the raw pull of wet skin, the hides resistance, and the physical strength required to balance the tension, all of it asks for presence within the body and connection to something ancient and intuitive.
Breath guides, the body listens, and hands remember.
Working in this way reminds us that we are not separate from nature.
It is an old, primal remembering, an exchange that directly calms the nervous system.

I work with deep reverence throughout the entire process, honouring both animal and tree as sacred collaborators in the creation of the drum.
I work closely with the land, preparing rawhide from local deer around me.
Each piece carries memory, story, and reciprocity.
What an honour to hold an animal's hide in my hands. To bear witness, tracing the scars of a life once lived, feeling the weight of their passing,
and holding gratitude for the teachings carried in this exchange.
Wild Scottish Deer
Every hide used in my work is sourced locally from necessary deer management culls in Scotland. By transforming them into rawhide I am rescuing a secondary by-product that would otherwise be discarded as waste.
I process every single hide completely by hand with absolute respect.
The Spirit of The Drum
No two drums are ever the same. Each one carries its own unique presence, rhythm, and spirit, slowly revealing its self through the making. Through this process, what begins with raw natural materials transforms into something completely new, a companion for ritual, remembrance, healing, and connection.
